Step 1: Remove everything from your closet and place them in categories on your bed and/or floor; leaving an empty closet to work with. Take each item of clothing (including shoes, belts, scarves etc) and put them into TWO piles. A “YES” pile and a “NO” pile.

  • Your “YES” pile should ONLY contain items you LOVE & WEAR. Items that fit you TODAY at your current weight etc. Items that you actually wore in the last year and felt good about wearing.
  • Your “NO” pile should contain items you NEVER WEAR & that DON’T FIT. It doesn’t matter how much you paid for the item or if you think it will fit great when you lose that 5 pounds you be meaning to shed. If it doesn’t fit TODAY and you haven’t worn it in the last year…get rid of it! (Getting rid of stuff may be the hardest part for some, but remember this: cluttering your closet with things you don’t use will only discourage you, overwhelm you and make you “hate everything you own.”)
  • The “MAYBE” pile. While doing Step 1 you may come across some items that are “MAYBES.” Items that do fit and look great but you’re not sure what to wear them with or what occasion they are right for. If they really do fit and look great put them in the “YES” pile. If not, ditch ‘em!

Step 2: Put your “YES” items back in the closet and get rid of the “NO” items in one of two ways.

  • When putting your “YES” items away, make sure to do it in an organizational matter. Meaning categorize your items by hanging dresses with dresses, tops with tops, pants with pants and so on. (For the super organize: within those categories lump like colors together.)
  • Take your “NO” items to your local consignment shop and try to sell them OR take them to the closest Salvation Army or Good Will and donate them. (Donations are tax deductible.)

Step 3: Make a shopping list and GO SHOPPING!

  • Now that you have an organized closet full of wonderful “YES” items, check out your inventory. What are some “Must-Have” pieces that you’re missing? Make a categorized list of the items and a list of stores you love, then…Go Shopping!
