Sometimes I forget that it’s winter and actually cold in the rest of the country and on other parts of the planet. I don’t miss freezing NY winters, but I do miss the layer it on fashion. Especially for men. Men don’t have a lot to work with. They wear pants, a top, shoes, a watch and they’re pretty much done. But in the colder months, I encourage you guys to play with layers. Pile on the two jackets, a scarf, throw on a hat, and some gloves. Play with a pop of color or pattern and yes! please wear a great pair shades (in the daytime only!). Use these men as inspiration. Men’s fashion for Spring/Summer 2012 is all about 1950s cool. Rolled-up pants, shades, loafers and varsity jackets.

Let’s chat about the varsity jacket, shall we? I love the look but strongly believe it should be reserved for the young (35 and younger). After that, (and 35 is pushing it) it starts to feel a bit juvenile or like a sad middle-aged man trying to recapture a little of the glory…days (thanks Bruce). Maybe it’s because I’m absolutely obsessed with Homeland or maybe it’s because I love the chic simplicity of Claire Danes’ J Mendel ensemble, either way, I vote her Best Dressed at tonight’s Golden Globes. A close second goes to Charlize Theron in Dior and Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci. Though, I will say I was a fan of a lot of the gowns this year.
