As a Dominican girl from Brooklyn residing in Los Angeles, Lidia’s Dominican Kitchen makes me one happy Latina! Truth be told, there is nothing better than my mama’s cooking, but Lidia’s comes in a close second. Food trucks are a big deal in LA and though I am slowly getting accustomed to the idea of them, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this bright orange vehicle on the corner of La Brea and Beverly. I stopped immediately. You see, though LA offers a plethora a delicious Mexican food, Mexican food is very different than Dominican food. Domincan food, like Puerto Rican and Cuban food, incorporates a combination of Spanish, indigenous Taíno, and African influences. It’s all delicious and it all tastes like home.
Here’s a glimpse at the menu…Lidia’s has all the excellent staples of Latin cooking; pollo (chicken), pernil (pork), rice & beans and tostones (fried plantains) plus more!
I opted for the pernil with rice & beans and maduros (fried sweet plantains) with a Malta to wash it down. Ok, not the lightest lunch but freaking delicious!
The staff consist of 3 Latinas from New York, with the lovely Michelle outside the truck to take your order. How adorable/hot is she?!
So, if you’re ever around La Brea and Beverly stop in and try a little taste of Dominican cooking. They’re open Monday – Friday from 12-3p and 6:30-10p. For more info follow them on Twitter @lidiasdkitchen ¡Buen Provecho!
