style me bridal – the ring  | Oct 10

And so it begins. My first post of my new monthly Style Me Bridal series. Every first Wednesday of the month from now until my big day, I’ll share the journey with you. Today it’s all about the ring! Damien and I decided about a year ago that we wanted to pick out my engagement ring together. We thought it would be just as special, if not more, to choose it as a team.
I knew I wanted an antique ring rather than a traditional engagement ring so our first (and last) stop was Platt Boutique Jewelry. A boutique shop, owned by siblings, full of antique beauties.
The second I tried this ring on (after trying about 20 others), I knew it was the one! Funny side note: Larry, who’s one of the owners, picked it out of the case for me…I didn’t even notice it until it was on my finger. It’s an Edwardian Era piece from 1915 and I’m totally in love.
Antiques are not only great because of their originality, but they also tend to be less expensive than a modern piece. Diamonds today are “higher quality” so you spend more. I say screw the “higher quality,” give me a pretty diamond that I won’t see on the next girl! Plus, personally I think the “a man should spend a month’s salary” on a ring is a little outrageous…I much rather we use that money towards a house or our honeymoon.
It’s sooooo weird being engaged. Damien and I have been together for 5 years and I always knew we would get married one day, but now it’s real. I didn’t think I could love him more than I already did, but guess what? I do! Our engagement was unconventional but perfect and so freaking emotional! No one ever tells you that part! Now, it’s time to plan a wedding. I’m such a control freak, I’m afraid I may turn into Bridezilla but I’m going to try my hardest not to let that happen. I love my man, my friends and my family too much to put them through that.

Any engaged or married readers with engagement or ring stories they want to share?
Would love to hear from you!

I didnt want a plain jane diamond ring. So I knew I wanted something interesting, I wanted a black diamond. So after talking to some jeweler friends we got a price and found one online. I knew it was coming and we actually had to go pick it up at FEDEX because they wouldnt deliver it to our house if we werent there. So it was weighing on my husbands mind all day, that if it was in the house I should have it. So later that next day I went out with a friend for a drink. And he made up a story that he had to go help his mom move a couch. He really went out and bought glow in the dark paint and painted my proposal on a door leading to our room, so I would see it when I got back. We have since sadly had to paint over that proposal to try and sell our house. But in the right light you can still see it.

Gorgeous ring! I always love seeing a bride’s engagement ring and her wedding dress! I think you can tell so much about someone’s personality by seeing this truly special pieces. Your ring is beautiful, and unique and also has a little bit of mystery to it, which I think suits you perfectly…

LOVE your ring!!! Congratulations!!! Not that it matters but I am also a Latina dating a Caucasian. :) My bf said he wants to pick out the ring together but I really don’t want to because I feel like it will spoil the surprise of the whole the proposal itself. How did you guys do that?

    • http://grasiemercedes.com/ grasie

hola my fellow latina! :) we picked out the ring almost a year before damien proposed so i was still very surprised and kind of forgot what the ring looked like. you can do that OR you can shop together and show him 2-3 rings you love then let him make final decision OR he can propose with a toy ring then you can shop for your ring together. i do think going together is a great idea though…what i thought i wanted before we went shopping, ended up not being what i wanted at all. you’re going to hopefully wear this ring the rest of your life so you want to make sure that you (and him) LOVE it. plus, the actual engagement will be sooooo emotional, at the moment, you won’t be the slightest “less surprised” because you know what the ring looks like. finally, tips for shopping together… 1. walk away when they start talking money (you don’t need to hear that part) 2. make sure to try the ring on and look in a full length mirror (certain rings looked good on my hand, but when i looked in a mirror, didn’t feel like “me” as a whole) 3. get a mani before you shop (it helps ;) congrats and happy ring shopping!!!!!

I 100% agree with your engagement ring thoughts. Would much rather prefer a one of a kind antique vs a generic ring everyone and their mother has. Like that you both picked it out together as well.

I love your ring, Grasie! I just got mine too, vintage 1930’s, and I’m totally with you on the “screw higher quality, I want something unique” thing. I had no idea what kind of ring I wanted, and the second I got this one on my finger I completely fell in love. We went and picked it out together, and I’m so happy to hear you guys did the same thing, because it is a little unconventional so it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one! Good luck with the wedding planning! ♥
