When I was 13, I was painfully awkward and insecure. I couldn’t look people in the eye and thought I was the ugliest thing alive. Luckily, I have the best mother in the world who gave me so much love and taught by example to respect and care for myself. I learned pretty quickly that my individuality is what made me special and that all my power had to come from within. I control my life. Me and only me. I entered high school with more confidence and self-love and by college, I knew I was the sh*t (we ALL are!). That insecure 13 year old girl still creeps in once and a while, but I put her in her place. I have two younger sisters and more than anything else I want them to know how important it is to take hold of their lives, follow their dreams and love themselves! That’s why I proudly wear this shirt in collaboration with Rachel Roy and the Self Rule campaign. Rachel Roy designed this tee and this is what she has to say about the campaign:

Life is about living it on your terms, with your own rules. Free will with Self Rule, this is what life is. I hope to encourage young people to be brave enough to live on their own terms.

Self Rule is in partnership with Step Up, a program that propels girls from under-resourced communities to fulfill their potential by empowering them to become confident, college-bound, career-focused, and ready to join the next generation of professional women. How rad is that?! It’s an amazing resource for all those young girls out there dealing with the same insecurities I did at 13. I was lucky to have a mom around and a descent home and support system; not all girls have that luxury. To find out more about Step Up click here and remember…live by your own rules!
